Gingivectomies are one of the many procedures that we offer our patients that serves the dual purpose of giving you a better looking smile, and a healthier mouth.

What is a gingivectomy?

When a mouth has too much gum tissue it may be necessary to perform a gingivectomy to remove the excess gums. Many people naturally have a lot of excess gums, and some have excess gums brought on by periodontal or gum disease. Whatever the reason, we are able to provide the solution in the safe and proven procedure known as gingivectomy.

Who needs a gingivectomy?

Sometimes the procedure is done to help beautify a smile because the patient is unhappy with the way their mouth looks. Most of the time gingivectomies are performed to reduce the danger that deep pockets an extreme gum inflammation can do to teeth in patients that have some form of gum disease.

Naturally "Gummy" Mouths

When teeth appear small or short, and the gums make up a large portion of the smile, that is often referred to as a "gummy" smile.

Gingivectomy for Gum Disease

The procedure to remove excess gums starts very simply by preparing the site with a numbing agent to ensure your comfort. Once we are certain that you are comfortable we will cut away the excess gum tissue and reshape the gumline to look natural and reduce the depth of the pockets between the teeth and gums. Once we are done removing the excess gums the procedure is over.

Sometimes we will add an additional putty to the gums to help them fight infection and heal over a short period. It will take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for your gums to fully heal. Generally, this procedure isn't uncomfortable during the procedure or after completion. Normal, light painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen do a great job at reducing discomfort after the procedure. Make sure to follow all pain medication instructions and warnings.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

A strict oral hygiene routine is the best way to prevent gum disease in the first place. When you forget to brush or floss for long periods of time the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease can build up. There is no discomfort associated with gum disease so it's common that people have it and don't even know.

Do I have gum disease?

The best way to tell if you have gum disease, or are starting to show signs that it may be in the early stages is to schedule an appointment with us or your general dentist to be seen. Signs that you have, or may be developing gum disease are gums that bleed easily (or a lot) when you brush or floss. Swollen and red-colored gums are common signs that gum disease could be an issue. Obviously, if your gum line changed and you start to lose sight of your teeth, or if the gums recede, you should come in to see us right away!
